HISTORY OF BOARDERS SURF SHOP
In 2004 Steven and Christian Stathis, a father-son team, opened Boarders Surf Shop. They are Rockaway Beach natives with family roots dating back nearly 90 years in this town. The family’s love affair with the ocean and surfing started long before entering the surf business. Back in the 1960s, Steve was an original member of one of the earliest surfing crews in NY, the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (see photos at right). Christian and his younger brother Craig, both followed in their father’s footsteps and learned to surf.
Christian is a NYC Firefighter. Prior to opening the shop, Steve worked for ConEdison for over 30 years. Despite the shop’s humble beginnings, their combined love of surfing, pride in their hometown and a commitment to providing the best products & service, has helped Boarders grow steadily since 2004 to be what it is today; home to a constantly growing surf community.
The original shop is located on Beach 92nd Street, a stone’s throw away from one of the best surfing breaks in the NYC area on Beach 90th Street. In 2011, they expanded their local presence to include a storefront right on the water at Beach 98th Street and the boardwalk. Both shops are easily accessible by train or ferry from areas like Brooklyn and NYC.
Boarders employs friendly staff members, who are part of the local surfing community and who work diligently to provide outstanding customer service and product knowledge.
People continue to come back season after season, year after year. Word about this shop seems to have spread around the surfing community both locally and abroad as they continue to see more and more visitors worldwide.
